The center has compiled certain guidelines shedding light on the ideal temperature to operate ACs. These guidelines were compiled by the Indian Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air Conditioner Engineers (ISHRAE) and shared by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD). The Ideal Temperature of Air conditioners

According to guidelines, the temperature of home-run ACs should be between 24-30 degrees Celcius. If air conditioners are to be used, recirculation by cool air can be accompanied by fresh air from the outside through slightly opened windows and exhaust by natural exfiltration. 

It is highly suggested that rooms should be ventilated even when ACs are not in use. 

What About Desert Coolers?

The guidelines advise the use of desert coolers or evaporative coolers to combat the heat and rising temperatures. To maintain hygiene and to keep dust at bay, it is always recommended to install air filters in these coolers. The coolers must draw air from the outside to ensure good ventilation and windows should be opened slightly to reduce the humidity.

Use of Electric Fans

When using electric fans, windows should also be opened for further ventilation. Switching on an exhaust fan also aids in getting the fresh air from the outside.

The Issue with Central Air Conditioning

As per experts, the use of window ACs seems alright and doesn’t create harm. The issue lies with the central air conditioning as it may lead to an increased chance of spreading the coronavirus to the other people in the same room, building, and other places like malls, hospitals, government offices, etc even if one person contracts it.
